Laura Gaither, the owner of Planet Vintage Girl (UK) Vintage Girl Antiques (US), has been collecting 20th Century objects for over sixteen years. She loves how different era's priorities and beliefs were translated into design aesthetics. "I've always been a 20th Century girl. Earlier stuff has just never held my interest. Plus I felt it was possible to speak with people who fondly remembered these pieces." For Laura, collecting is really a part of an environmental philosophy -it is a beneficial act of landfill re-direction. Collecting these objects saves them from being thrown away and creates an opportunity for another generation to appreciate them.
She has a B.A. in American History, an M.A. in American Studies, with specialization in visual media. She also has an A.A. in interior design with a specialization in architectural salvage and sustainable products.
Her first insight into how to run a top-notch antique 's business occurred while working at The Brass Knob, Washington DC's acclaimed architectural antiques store. She has also worked at a high-end east coast interior design firm and for two architectural firms that specialized in "green" buildings. As an international antiques consultant, she has provided expertise for a variety of organizations in the US and UK. Previous clients include: The Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History in Washington DC, Building Preservation Works of NY, Building Supply Recycling Center, Durham, NC, Cabins Cottages and Bungalows, Efland, NC and Insitu Manchester (architectural salvage) Manchester, UK.
Vintage Girl Antiques has wholesaled to Mid Century stores in NYC, Washington DC and other stores along the East Coast. Now located in Manchester, England, Vintage Girl supplies dealers and antique stores with American design classics and UK midcentury wares. The business's web site is www.planetvintagegirl.com.
